POLICE launched a murder inquiry after a doting dad was found dead on the stairs at his Southampton home, an inquest was told.

Tesco worker Slawomir Turek, 43, was still living with his ex-partner when he suffered a fatal head inquiry at their terraced house.

She was initially arrested on suspicion of murder because the couple had a history of domestic violence.

Detectives carried out a major investigation but found no evidence that she was involved in Mr Turek's death, Winchester Coroner's Court heard.

Originally from Poland, Mr Turek worked at a Tesco warehouse in Nursling.

Police were called to his house at Mansel Road West, Millbrook, at around 6.15am on March 30, 2022 after his ex-partner found him lying on the stairs.

Officers carried out CPR but Mr Turek is thought to have died shortly after returning home a few hours earlier.

A port-mortem examination carried out by Home Office pathologist Basil Purdue found that Mr Turek was almost four times the drink-drive limit. The cause of death was a head injury.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Gillooly said Mr Turek's ex-partner was arrested on suspicion of murder, mainly because the couple's relationship had included domestic abuse.

But he added: "There was nothing to suggest that she was not telling us the truth. The most likely hypothesis is that Mr Turek was intoxicated, fell down the stairs, and fatally injured himself.

"Domestic violence incidents had been reported by neighbours, but they did not hear any disturbance on the night."

Referring to an incident ten days earlier, he added: "Mr Turek called the police and said she had slashed his throat. But they were not slashes, they were light scratches. I think it's highly likely he caused the injuries himself."

Senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson said Mr Turek was found on the staircase, having returned home shortly after midnight and gone to his room.

He said it was "more likely than not" that Mr Turek tripped and fell after getting changed and deciding to go back downstairs. He recorded a conclusion of accidental death.

Speaking shortly after his death, Mr Turek's brother Andrzej told the Echo: "He was a lovely father, son and brother - and especially father to his daughter.

"He wanted to be a good person and a kind person, and he was very helpful to everyone who he met."
