MORE than 40 firefighters from across Hampshire and the New Forest dashed to a shop blaze near Portsmouth.

Crews from Cosham, Fareham, Havant, Southsea, St Mary's, and Waterlooville were called to a Co-op store at Hambledon Road, Denmead, at around 1.30pm on Wednesday.

Support vehicles from Alton, Beaulieu, and Eastleigh were also in attendance, along with an aerial ladder.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the roof fire using jets and hose reels.

"Ventilation fans were in operation to clear smoke from the building. Local residents were advised to avoid the area.

"The incident was scaled down to two fire engines before the stop message came in at around 4pm."

Reports say the blaze started in bins at the back of the shop and spread to the roof.

Shoppers in a nearby branch of Boots were evacuated as the fire took hold.

Posting on social media the Co-op said: "A big heartfelt thanks to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for their swift response and efforts, ensuring everyone's safety.

"We'd also like to thank the quick action of our colleagues in Denmead and the support from the local community.

"Once we've assessed the damage to the store, we will start work straightaway on repairs and will do everything we can to get it reopened as soon as possible.

"However, we anticipate the store will remain closed for an extended period of time so would like to thank our customers for their understanding and patience."
