Southampton's most dangerous neighbourhoods have been revealed with new crime data breaking down offences over the last three years.

Statistics for the city show a total of 36,161 crimes were committed there during the entirety of 2022, which was an increase from 34,056 in 2021.

Alongside this, Southampton is considered the 'most dangerous city in Hampshire', and is among the top 10 most dangerous overall out of Hampshire's 268 towns, villages and cities.

Additionally, the data from CrimeRate.co.uk also broke down which neighbourhoods in Southampton were considered to be the 'most dangerous' with the amount of crime committed there.

This was compiled by mapping incidents between August 2020 and July 2023 to get a crime rate per 1,000 residents for each neighbourhood.

What are Southampton's most dangerous neighbourhoods?

The neighbourhood with the highest crime rate during the time period was Central Southampton West with 381.4 crimes per 1,000 people.

Newtown & Nicholstown had the second-highest rate at 259.88 crimes per 1,000 people, whilst Freemantle was not far behind in third place at 255.52 crimes per 1,000 people.

Some of Southampton's outer suburbs had relatively high rates with Shirley Warren having the fourth-highest rate of 210.29 crimes per 1,000 people.

Meanwhile, on the lower end of the spectrum, Bassett Green had the lowest rate at just 46.34 crimes per 1,000 people and Upper Shirley was second-best at 65.61.

CrimeRate.co.uk added: "The most common crimes in Southampton are violence and sexual offences, with 16,065 offences during 2022, giving a crime rate of 60.

"This is 6% higher than 2021's figure of 15,165 offences and a difference of 3.34 from 2021's crime rate of 56.

"Southampton's least common crime is robbery, with 308 offences recorded in 2022, a decrease of 11% from 2021's figure of 347 crimes."

For crime statistics in 2023 so far, Southampton has a rate 77% higher than the average in the South East region and 62% higher than the national average.
