A busy Hampshire road has been closed in both directions following a multi-vehicle accident.

At least three vehicles were involved in the crash, which has blocked Newgate Lane, Fareham.

One of the cars ended up in a ditch.

Posting on social media police said: "Just awaiting recovery so we can get the road re-opened. Minor injuries and police enquiries ongoing."

Reports say seven or eight ambulances were sent to the scene.

Newgate Lane, home of the Royal Navy training base HMS Collingwood, is the main road between Fareham and Peel Common.

Drivers going to and from Rowner and Lee-on-Solent are among those who use the route.

One social media user said they had been told the incident involved five cars at the Newgate Lane/Peel Common roundabout.

Another added: "I was on the scene and just want to clarify that all involved are okay, minor injuries and a bit shaken up but okay.

"I imagine the road will be closed a couple more hours yet. There’s quite a bit of glass etc on the road that needs clearing."

Traffic is being diverted through Stubbington.
