Four people were injured in a five-car accident that closed a busy Hampshire road for several hours.

Newgate Lane East at Fareham was shut in both directions after the crash happened shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Three men and a woman suffered minor injuries in the collision, which caused long tailbacks in the Fareham area.

One of the cars involved in the pile-up ended up in a ditch.

Some of the people who took to social media in the wake of the accident said seven or eight ambulances were sent to the scene.

One person said the accident occurred at the Newgate Lane/Peel Common roundabout.

Another added: "I was on the scene and just want to clarify that all involved are okay, minor injuries and a bit shaken up but okay.

"I imagine the road will be closed a couple more hours yet. There’s quite a bit of glass etc on the road that needs clearing."

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 5.15pm to a report of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on Newgate Lane East.

"Five cars were involved. Three men and one woman reported minor injuries."
