Firefighters were called to Hythe Marina Village after two teenage boys became trapped in mud.

Crews from three fire stations - Hardley, Fareham, and Redbridge, were called to Shamrock Way.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) worked alongside coastguards in a one-hour drama.

A HIWFRS spokesperson said: "While one of the boys managed to get free the other, in his attempts to get out, had worked himself further into the mud.

"Fire crews used portable rescue platforms, known as mud paths, to reach the casualty to make a stable platform around the boy and dug him out releasing him from the bog."

Firefighters spent an hour at the scene after being called out at 10.30am on Saturday.

The 225-home marina village occupies a large area north of Hythe Pier, which juts 700 yards out into Southampton Water.

Every year the Great Waterside Raft Race is held between the marina and the pier to raise funds for the RNLI.

The marina featured in the BBC "sex-and-sailing" soap Howards' Way, which was filmed in the Solent area. Other locations included the Jolly Sailor pub at Bursledon.

Howards' Way, starring Maurice Colbourne and Jan Harvey, ran for six series between 1985 and 1990.
