A new Turkish kebab eatery has opened in Southampton.

Afiyet Oğlum had its grand opening on Burgess Road in Swaythling on Monday, February 12, with customers lining the street to get their first taste of a duck doner and curly fries.

The kebab shop – that allows customers the option of both takeaway and dine-in food – is owned by the same family that runs Uni Kebab in the same road, with 19-year-old Isaak Gezer running the new business for his family.

He told the Echo: “We're all about bringing something fresh and modern to the kebab scene.

“Monday’s opening exceeded our expectations, we had a line of people stretching down the street, which really took us by surprise.

“It validated to us that we're onto something good. We were especially surprised when our Duck Doner sold out within the first hour, and we ended up serving over 100 customers in that time.

“Right now, our Sticky Thai Doner Box with Duck Doner and Curly Fries seems to be a popular option.”

The opening of the eatery has already created eight new jobs – most of which are students – who are the target market for the kebab house with Southampton University’s campus located so near to the premises.

Isaak added: “We're located near the University Highfield Campus, so naturally, we're attracting a lot of students.

“However, we're open to everyone who loves a good kebab!

“Afiyet Oğlum is a separate venture from Uni Kebab, but we're lucky to have my dad, Aziz Gezer, who's a multi-award-winning chef, lending us his experience to maintain our food quality.”

Only last month Uni Kebab was nominated for an award at the prestigious 2024 British Kebab Awards.

This comes after the restaurant scooped two accolades – best chef and best regional restaurant – at the 2023 TURTA/Turkish Restaurant and Takeaway Awards.

Commenting on Uni Kebab receiving a nomination for a national award, Isaak told the Echo: “Being nominated for a national award is truly an honour and a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team at Uni Kebab.

“It fills me with pride to receive such recognition for our commitment to delivering exceptional service and authentic Turkish cuisine.”
