A man who was seriously assaulted in Southampton earlier this month has died from his injuries.

Police officers were called just after 8pm on Tuesday, May 14 by South Central Ambulance Service to a report of an assault in Kent Street.

Officers attended and Fuzel Miah, 44, from Southampton, was taken to hospital, where he has now died.

Hampshire Police confirmed that Mr Miah died on Saturday evening.

An investigation was launched and 35-year-old Ashley James Lear, of Kent Street, was charged with Section 20 grievous bodily harm.

He is remanded in custody ahead of his next court hearing at Southampton Crown Court on June 24.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of intentionally assisting or encouraging the commission of an offence.

She was later released from custody with no further action taken against her.

A large cordon was put in place around the block of flats after the incident, with armed police and the air ambulance attending the scene.

Officers were seen on the first floor of Kent House, a tower block on the street.

Police remained on the scene late into the evening of May 14 and into the next day, with crime scene investigators seen scouring the building.

Residents were asked to keep away from the area which had been taped off by police.

They spoke of their shock at the time of the incident.

One woman said:  “The road got very busy, and there were ambulance cars all around. It’s quite a shock, to be honest.”

Commenting on Facebook, Stella Pring, said: “This is terrible what's happening to the world."
