A popular Hampshire councillor has parted company with the Conservative groups on two local authorities.
Cllr Neville Penman, who represents Totton, is no longer a member of the ruling Tory groups on Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council.
NFDC leader Jill Cleary said he had been suspended by his fellow Conservatives on the council, adding: "It's a personal matter."
But Cllr Penman, a former chairman of the authority, said he had resigned from both groups.
He told the Daily Echo: "I've got a personal problem and health issues, which is why I have stood down."
Posting on social media a few minutes later, he said: "I can confirm that I’ve resigned from the Conservative group at both Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council.
"I remain a loyal member of the Conservative Party and New Forest East Conservative Association. I have left the Conservative groups in order that I can focus upon a health and a personal matter.
"I am still a councillor and still collecting for Ukraine."

It comes after Liberal Democrat councillor David Harrison said Cllr Penman had been "dropped" by the Tories.
A statement on his website says: "I received an e-mail, along with all councillors, informing me that fellow Totton county councillor Neville Penman is no longer a member of the Conservative group on Hampshire County Council and indeed New Forest District Council.
"He has lost his place on the New Forest National Park Authority.
"I immediately called Nev and wished him well and offered any support needed. We are longstanding friends. He has been very kind to so many people, including myself when I wasn’t well.
"It isn’t for me to announce why he has been dropped by a Conservative party he has supported and campaigned for so many years. However, it is no secret that he has significant health issues.
"Nobody can take away his significant achievements and record of public service."

Cllr Penman's announcement on Facebook has prompted an outpouring of public support on social media.
One person posted: "A big 'thank you' Neville for everything you have done over the years. Without your dedication and commitment to selflessly helping others in need, we would be a much poorer community.
"Sincerely wishing you well and rejuvenated health to enable you to return to full speed as quickly as possible."
Another added: "I'd like to personally thank you for all your help over the years, you are a really amazing man. I hope that you have a swift recovery from your illness."
The New Forest National Park Authority confirmed that Cllr Penman was no longer a member of the authority.
