Police have launched an investigation after a man died in an incident at a Southampton bowling alley.

Officers were called to the Tenpin complex in Auckland Road after a "concern for welfare" alert led to the building being closed and cordoned off.

Firefighters and paramedics also attended the incident, which began shortly after 1pm on Sunday.

An inquest is expected to be held into the man's death and police are set to obtain witness statements from people who saw what happened.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We attended, along with our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service. Sadly, a 58-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious. The man’s next of kin has been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

Police confirmed that the man came from Southampton but have not released any further information about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Several people have taken to social media to voice their shock and dismay at what happened.

One woman said her thoughts went out to the dead man's family, those who tried to help him, and everyone who saw the incident.

She added: "I can only imagine how traumatic it must have been."

Another social media user added: "Incredibly sad. Thinking of those who tried to save him and who witnessed this, including the staff of the venue."

The incident was attended by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

An air ambulance spokesperson said: "A doctor and two advanced paramedics were deployed by helicopter and an additional advance paramedic by car to provide critical care." The fire service said a Redbridge crew was called to the scene to provide privacy screens.

Tenpin has been approached for comment.

An application to close the 36-lane bowling alley and turn the site into a builders merchant was submitted in 2022.

Hundreds of people signed a protest petition set up by Amanda Baker, who said Tenpin was the "only place left" in the area that was "cheap and affordable" for children.

Documents submitted by the applicant, Canada Life, said the centre had been hit by competition from Hollywood Bowl at Westquay.

Three months after planning permission was granted, Tenpin issued a statement detailing "successful efforts" to prevent the facility from closing.
