SHANE WARNE has backed Hampshire to win a place in the C & G Trophy semi-finals without him.

Hampshire will play Surrey at the Oval on July 15/16, when Warne will be on Ashes duty with Australia.

Warne said: "I leave on July 12th so I won't be here and will be disappointed not to be part of it, but I'm sure the boys will do the job.

"I don't think I've done too much, the boys have started to show they can play cricket and they're showing their ability.

"It doesn't matter if I'm not there, the boys will adapt to that fine. It's a knock-out competition so you've got to keep winning."

If Hampshire progress, Warne would also miss the C & G semi-final and the final but he preferred to reflect on an oustanding all round display against Glamorgan after his side completed a six-wicket win having lost the toss.

He added: "I said to the boys in the morning 'you've got to be up for it no matter what'. This is it - there is no second chance in this form of the game.

"We thought, if we could restrict them to 240, it was a pretty gettable target with small boundaries and a pretty good wicket.

"I wasn't very happy with our first four overs but after that our boys fought back really well, we stuck at it and the fielding was good."

Warne promoted himself and Chris Tremlett as pinch hitters before Kevin Pietersen was given the stage to showcase his talents as Hampshire passed Glamorgan's 214 with 10.5 overs to spare.

He added: "Pothas had a licence at the top of the order, that's his game, he can do whatever he wants up there.

"He can walk across, he can charge, and in the two games he's batted there he's done unbelievably well both at Lord's and today.

"We thought we could get 85 off the first 15 with a couple of pinch hitters such as myself and Chris, and also waste a few balls for our batters after 15 overs.

"I knew Croft would put the fielders back and there would be a lot of ones and twos. It worked pretty well.

"At 89 for four we weren't getting nervous because it was only two wickets and myself and Chris would probably bat eight or nine or ten.

"We still had Lamb, Mascarenhas, Ervine and even Shaggy (Shaun Udal) to come so we still had plenty of batting.

"Nic will probably stay at the top of the order for a while but the good thing about this side at the moment is that it's pretty flexible."
