Giles White has been appointed as Hampshire's new second XI coach.

Former Hampshire opening batsman White, pictured left, has worked with the county's academy side for the last two years and his new role allows Tony Middleton to concentrate on working as academy director.

Director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: "The academy has more than doubled in size since its inception. There are now 12 academy players and we've also introduced a junior academy. As performance director, Raj Maru looks after the age groups up to under-19 level but Tony will continue to oversee the main academy.

"His role now is not just about coaching, it's about sports psychology and lifestyle management and takes up all 12 months, not just the summer."

White, 32, has a level 3 ECB coaching certificate and today he flew out to Australia to work for Paul Terry at the Hampshire manager's Ausacademy in Perth, where he will be based until March.

He said: "I've worked with the second XI and the academy alongside Tony and this is a progression. It's something that was offered to me and it's an opportunity I want to take up."

White played played for Hampshire for nine seasons before retiring in 2002, and scored 6,195 first class runs at 30.66 during his 11-year career, including nine hundreds.
