Winchester's popular winter indoor six-a-side cricket league at River Park is on the brink of folding - because the local district association can find no one to run it!

Clubs were told this week that if no volunteer is found in the next two weeks, the 28-year old Sunday evening competition will be scrapped.

If it does shut down, clubs like Easton & Martyr Worthy, St Cross Symondians and Winchester KS, besides a host of village teams, will have no where to play indoor cricket this winter.

Association secretary Roy Harrison underlined his disappointment at the lack of interest from anyone wishing to take over what he describes as a "none too onerous" job. "Twice this summer circular letters have been sent to the secretaries of the 36 teams who play at River Park warning them of the problem, but I've not had a single call from anyone," he said.

Harrison, who plans to step down after 16 years as Winchester & District association secretary in October, emphasised that running the indoor league was not a time consuming job.

"The would-be secretary simply has to liaise with the River Park management over hall bookings and co-ordinate the results each week.

"It doesn't really amount to much more than that as the whole winter's fixtures are computerised and the umpire appointments done independently," Harrison added.

Winchester-area clubs haven't got long to find someone to take over the running of the 36-team indoor league from Alan Zanetti, who retired from the post at the end of last season.

Mr Harrison emphasised that the problem only related to the adult league.
