Staff and customers at the Wine Bar and Bistro in Bishop's Waltham have helped to raise £6,000 for the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

The money, which will go to the Nick Jonas ward, is the proceeds of a charity golf match at East Horton, near Fair Oak, and an auction.

Items donated to be sold included memorabilia signed by Southampton footballers past and present, Matt Le Tissier and James Beattie, and former Hampshire cricket captain, Robin Smith.

The money raised will go towards helping patients have cancer treatment at home and some will be used to buy syringe drivers, which ensure medication is provided at the appropriate rate.

Andy Burdon is a regular at the Wine Bar and Bistro. He was recently diagnosed with leukaemia and it was at his request that the money was donated to the cancer ward.

"It's really good to see the money going to a local cause that will help local people, rather than being swallowed up by a national charity," he said.

The cheque was presented to the hospital on Monday by bistro owner, Steve Brookwell, and Robin Smith and it was accepted by consultant haematologist, Dr Chris James, who said: "We are delighted with the generous donation. It is a huge boost for patients to have their treatment in the comfort of their own homes and we are grateful to the Wine Bar and Bistro for making this possible."
