TRIBUTES have been paid to a former long-serving Daily Echo photographer renowned for his love of cricket.

Tony Fownes, who died this month after a period of poor health, was one of the newspaper's most distinguished photographers, well known for his work at Hampshire County Cricket Club.

Former Daily Echo picture editor Phil Burner, said: "Tony was one of the best sports photographers around. He knew the game of cricket so well he could capture the precise moment a ball was nicked off the bat."

Mr Fownes, pictured, was born in 1922 in Amesbury, near Salisbury. He married his wife Beryl in 1948 and moved to Southampton, joining the Daily Echo.

In 1977, he left the city to take his family to Alderney in the Channel Islands but returned to Southampton in 1990.

Mr Fownes' son Bruce said: "I will remember him with fond affection. I used to love going to the Dell and the County ground with him."

He leaves behind his widow Beryl, three children and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Monday (27th)at Salisbury Crematorium at 11.15am.
