Gosport Borough sprang an ECB Cockspur Cup national club cricket championship shock when they sent Andover spinning to a 46-run defeat at London Road.

Former Royal Navy seam bowler Brendan Regan set up Borough's win, taking 4-4 in 16 balls after tea.

Gosport were optimistic about defending 141-8, built around Alec Styles (32), Lee Harrop (28), Jamie Presswell (28) and John Adams (21).

But they were always on a winner after the evergreen Regan ripped through Andover's top order.

He was on a hat-trick after trapping Mark Miller leg before and bowling elder brother, Roger, first ball.

Regan had both Mike Adams and Tim Saye back in the pavilion soon after to leave Andover 11-4.

Three more blows by Styles (3-34) plunged Andover in deeper trouble before Richard Taylor's 37 hoisted the losing total to 95 (Gareth Freeman 2-15).

James Taylor took three wickets and top scored with 47 for Hursley Park.

But his efforts failed to prevent Portsmouth winning by 40 runs at The Quarters.

Portsmouth were in some difficulty at 93-6 (Michael Barnes 36) after Taylor's three-wicket spell.

Dan Cornish (55), supported by James Manning (25) and Paul Ancell, lifted Portsmouth to 203 all out (Raman Prendergast 3-32).

Park lurched to 56-4 against Rick Marston (3-16), but rallied while Taylor (47) and Chris Wheeler (28) were together. Paul Ancell's spell of 4-45 saw Hursley slip to 163 all out.

Matt Compton celebrated his Ventnor return with a century which eased the islanders to a six-wicket win over Lymington at Steephill.

The left-hander hit 17 boundaries in his 102, which carried Ventnor past Lymington's 179-7 (Mark Newton 43).

Ian Hilsum (3-13) ripped out Lymington's middle-order after Simon King (37) and Adie Hunt (20) had given the visitors a sound start.

But a target of 180 didn't test Ventnor, who won with ten overs to spare.

New Milton lost by six wickets to Basingstoke & North Hants, who visit South Wilts in the second round.

Milton lost early wickets and, despite being propped up by Lee Beck (41), found 168-7 impossible to defend.

Darren Vann (62) and Howard Gadsby (60) underpinned Alton's 247-9 against Shinfield, who were dismissed for 114 (Myers 4-7).
