Dani Osvaldo suspended by Southampton FC for alleged headbutt on Jose Fonte

Dani Osvaldo’s future at Saints has been plunged into uncertainty, after the club’s record signing was suspended for allegedly head-butting José Fonte in training.

The centre back suffered facial injuries during Wednesday’s incident, with some blood understood to have been drawn.

The damage is not serious, though, and the defender was at the club’s Staplewood base, as normal, for training today.

Saints decided to take the strongest course of immediate action available to them by suspending Osvaldo, who they accused of a “breach of conduct”, for two weeks.

A fine also looks likely for the Italian international, with two weeks’ wages – believed to be around the £120,000 mark – the most severe punishment the club could dish out in that regard.

While Osvaldo is the subject of a disciplinary process, Saints see no reason to take, or even consider, any action against Fonte.

Clearly trying to engineer a transfer out of the club. Disgusting behaviour. If it was two members of the public the assaulter would be arrested at least for ABH.

I am sorry but I simply cannot agree with your comment.
How can the club stand by someone like this. He should go right now. In his short time at the club he has had one moment of brilliance. He is either suspended or injured more than he is available.

I think someone who is paid £60,000 per week ought to be someone special. Certainly not seen anything special in him. He just seems to be a thug and for what happened at Newcastle and for what has allegedly happened this week he should be sacked. He is a disgrace. Lets show him the Southampton way by showing him the door.

Footballers are in an extremely privileged position and are paid a fortune to play football. Osvaldo's behaviour has been appalling and he should lose his privileged position. He should be made to go out to work like the rest of us. Perhaps then he might appreciate the club who have spent a fortune on him

I guess we now have to manage this situation to minimise any losses on an early departure which must now now seem likely - and probably necessary. Dani seems to have a severe case of the Joey Bartons - without making the sizeable contribution Barton made on the pitch. Real shame because he obviously has the talent to be a star.

I'm so annoyed that quite honestly if I happen to come across Dani in a dark street I'm gonna say in no uncertain terms: "Hello Mister Osvaldo."

Come on Katharina bite the bullet and get the Don back.

This club NEEDS strong leadership almost "dictatorial" leadership and it is missing at the moment.

Can you imagine the Osvaldo story coming out. He would have had a "cold" or a "minor injury" for 2 weeks and we would have shipped out at FULL value. After the story has come out we will be lucky to get back HALF of what we paid for him even if anybody wants to take him !!!!!.

I even think it is unlikely that the "incident" would even have happened anyway. The Don always kept a "happy group" of players that support each other, he was VERY GOOD at "Man Management" !!!!

With regard to the injury to Lovern, can you imagine us telling the opposition the length of time a player is going to be injured for ? If we try to bring in a new centre half now the other team will know WE ARE DESPERATE and we will have to PAY TOP PRICE !!!!!

If we had kept it secret we might have done a deal for a centre half but I think it unlikely now because we have told everyone how long he is out for.

COME ON KATHARINA BITE THE BULLETT AND GET THE STRONG LEADERSHIP BACK.

Do you actually think that when Oz is sparking off, he is considering what NC is going to think about him? No sir, it's a case of light blue touch paper and retire immediately, it's going to blow.

I think your quite right about selling him but as for the price on his head I think with his known history of violence against even his own teams and not being able to raise his game to the same level of the English footballers not many clubs would be coming in for him now, best get rid now before he hurts more of the team because this is just not going to make for happy families with the rest of the outfit.

Nicola Cortese resigned from Saints. Katharina Liebherr did try to persuade him to stay! Therefore no bullet biting is necessary!!! The requirement now is for stability in the running of the Club, which the owner has told us she is already addressing. An interim CEO has been appointed. Katharina has owned the club for quite a while and has earned our trust. She is supporting the Saints in the best way that an owner can, so she deserves the support and trust of the fans. The best thing we Saints fans can do is what we know best, which is to support every Saints player loudly and wholeheartedly at every match. Never mind about biting any bullets . . . . . . . just trust Katharina! She wants to put smiles on faces, meaning she is on our side! Nicola Cortese is part of Saints history, but we can still look forward to a bright future, with Saints secure in Katharina's hands! COYR!!!

Just a couple of points. 1. Cortese quit! KL was quoted as saying she wanted him to stay. 2. Cortese wasn't quite as palsy walsy with the playing group as has been portrayed. Cork was quoted that he didn't see or hear from NC much some players did some didn't. In same interview Cork said players were amused at talk of crisis and that MoPo was far more important to them. I am still grateful for all NC has done but maybe some more transparency under a new chairman would be a pleasant change. Finally on Dani. I support what ever course of action MoPo takes he knows the players better than ANYONE

it amazes me how many people have opinions and `knowledge` when stories like this appear. where are you all when saints win? why don't you know whats going on when there isn't any bad news? why don't you talk about games at the weekends?
there were loads of people who turned up when this story broke telling us how dani had `slapped` or `punched` a player some said that he had `spat at luke`. it now appears, probably true but you never know, that he headbutted JF, shows how much some people know.
what happens now is down to dani MP and the club. I`m just glad that the knee-jerk reactionaries haven't got a say in what happens.

WTF was he thinking, certainly not of us and the team.

Remember how good the first 10 games felt…now the last ten games, NC, injuries, missed opportunities, nonetheless it is our way….

... look at our past every time excepting 76 we threaten to come good we always and I mean always 8ugger it up…it is the Southampton way..

...we could have won the 79 league cup, …

…we could have won the league 82…

…we could have won the league 84…

...we could have won the FA cup 84 and done more in the 87 semi final…

...we could have gone to penalties with Arsenal in 2003..

…we could have won league one..

…we could have won the Championship…

….we could have had at least 12 points more this season just by taking a reasonable % our chances…

…I am beginning to think were jinxed…but no it's the Southampton way..ffs.
Tthat's a lot
Pompey nears misses
2010 missed penalty v Chelsea cup final could of won cup
2008 Charity shield lost Man utd on penalties..
lost to Leicester play off semi final old div 2
1990S Lost to liverpool on penalties.. to get to cup final 2nd replay
not promoted to old division 1 on goal difference twice ,
Should of Beat AC MILAN 2-0 they come back 2-2 .
Only gave you a thumbs down as it should read :- could have / Should have, not "of" which is a common miskate and you are not alone in making it.

This guy has a serious anger management problem, which he needs professional help with. Perhaps he should go and see someone fast because right now he's problem.
Others on this thread have likened it to the Suarez situation, but with Suarez it was his desire and determination to win, with Osvaldo it just seems like he can't control himself in a situation where he's provoked...and Suarez is to-date the more successful PL player, perhaps even the more gifted I would suggest. Not that that should excuse any of the behaviour at all.
Let's face it, we're stuck with him right now so may as well see if he can be turned around; and if he gets to go to the World Cup and does well, perhaps his value will rise again, to be totally mercenary about it!

More or less what I was thinking, 101. I'm a big fan of Jose and what he brings to the team and the club as a whole. He's been a model pro when picked and when he's been benched. He's worked hard and proved many (including me) wrong about his ability to play at Prem level. Meanwhile, no way would I defend any violence by a Saints player no matter what the situation.

However, given how little factual information we actually have, I can't agree with the majority on here who would gladly be rid of him. I'd rather leave that decision in the hands of the club who have, for now, taken what they see as the right action. If they choose to transfer list him, sobeit, if they choose to keep him and he plays, it will indicate that he's served his punishment and is back in the fold and then he'll get my full support (and, no doubt, Jose's, too).

This must have been a massive shock to poor old Jose, Coming across an aggressive, physical striker. That 6ft 2in frame of his would have crumbled into a quivering heap at the first sight of an irate and menacing footballer. Having never experienced anything like that in his entire, highly competitive, and aggressive, in ya face footballing career.

My thoughts are with you Jose! at this difficult time.

well I for one cant wait for this month to be over.
we went into the month thinking we might get 1 or 2 players, even though we were told we wouldn't, but we will go out of it having lost NC, losing gaston and dejan for 2 months, having way too many stories in the press, constant rumours about MP leaving or SRL, luke, lalla etc. going and now we've got Dani blowing his top! there`s only a week left of this month and I hope that's the last time we get in the papers, apart from match reports and maybe a player purchase here and there.
I new there was some bad luck coming when I opened my back door on new years day and saw a magpie sitting on my fence. I staying in on Feb 1st.

If this incident occurred in your workplace it would be summary dismissal on the spot. Also if the police were called it would result in a prosecution for GBH. Maybe football is different because there is physical contact in the training and matches and therefore more likely to lead to a retaliation but either way this is bang out of order. If he losses it so much he's prepared to **** a teammate then he's going to get a lot of red cards. He's only just served his suspension for getting involved at Newcastle and he wasn't even on the blood pitch!

are you qualified to give a psychological profile of Dani? have you ever met him and had chance to **** his mental well being? or are you just assuming that what you think is true?
as seeing if he can turn it around and have a good world cup, that would be fine by me as it would mean a Southampton player playing at the top of his game. we would then be stupid to sell him, if he`s turned it around that is.

Just a thought, what is the point of passing sentence and instigating punishment, if you are going to get rid of him? I reckon he will serve his time, will be expected to have learnt his lesson and will be asked to make up for it by going from zero to hero as soon as he can. If he returns against Stoke City and bags a hat trick I could lean towards a bit of forgiveness, not a lot, but it would be appreciated. If he can't hack it, that's his problem.
