A YOUNG mum who died after taking a fatal amount of a so called "legal high" had been experimenting for months with various drugs in a bid to find the "perfect buzz", an inquest heard.

Hampshire's Coroner Court heard how Lucy Simms had a "diary" which methodically recorded numerous experiments with drugs and how they affected her.

Coroner Grahame Short concluded that it was one of those experiment's that "went wrong" which killed the 26-year-old, ruling accidental death.

Her death came just six days before the drug found in her system - known as APB - was made illegal.

The inquest heard how mum-of-one Lucy was discovered in her bedroom in Vinery Road, Shirley, by her friend Lloyd Phillips. Her body was wrapped in two electronic cables.

In a statement read out to the court, Phillips – who used to run a shop in Southampton selling “legal highs” - said he had left her home the previous night after she had taken a "bomb" of a legal high known as APB.

He said she had waved him off at the door and he didn't return until the next afternoon when he found her dead.

Phillips, who has since been jailed for raping and drugging a young woman as well as other drugs charges, was initially arrested on suspicion of her murder but after an extensive police enquiry no further action was taken.

Mr Short told the hearing that while he didn't accept that Phillips' statement gave the full account of his involvement, he was satisfied that Phillips had given Lucy the drug but as APB had not yet been made illegal, this was not a criminal act.

A post mortem revealed that the cables wrapped loosely around Lucy's abdomen and neck had not had not caused any injury.

Pathologist Russell Delaney said he found 80 marks of injury on her body, mainly small bruises and abrasions which had occurred at various times and were "not indicative" of a violent episode of assault.

Some of the abrasions appeared to have happened at or around the time of death but he said that it was possible that these could have been caused by her dog, who was in the house at the time.

Toxicology tests revealed that Lucy had taken a high dose of APB, a relatively new drug deemed to be similar to amphetamine and ecstasy, which at the levels found in her body would have been fatal.

The hearing also heard from Detective Sergeant Gareth Jones who said that packets of 5APB, 6APB and another drug known as MDAI had been found at Lucy's home, as well as a box of notes that "seem to document experiments of various kinds of substances".

He added: "They described mixing things in order to create the perfect buzz."

Coroner Short concluded that there was no evidence to suggest a third party had forced Lucy to swallow the drug and that it was a "foolish" decision to do so.

He added: "I find that the evidence shows that Lucy did not intend to end her life but rather that she did not fully understand the effects of the drugs she was taking."

Tragic and completely unneccessary.

Another poor, innocent baby/child left behind by the parents troubled and selfish habits.

Very sad case, my thoughts go out to her family atbthos difficult time. In order to know for certain that this drug killed her, the coroner needs to know the LD50 of the drug (the level per kilogram it takes to kill someone) and the concentration of the drug in hee body.

He gives neither, so his conclusion that the drug killed her seems speculative and circumstantial.

One of problems of a lack of regulation of these drugs is thar the users have no idea od their toxicity, so can not make rational decisions on what is a non-lethal dose or what the drug might eeaxt dangerously with. The latter was the case with the drug GBL which is very dangerous when combined with alcohol.

Lastly one of the reasons people take these legal highs is because drugs like ecstasy and cannabis (which are well researched) are made illegal.

My drug was fruit machines so purely financial hurt. Other drugs can be far more painful. Its a shame this girl was not satisfied with being a parent and more concerned about her next "fix". Drugs of any kind can have that effect. Then when you mix with the wrong people as this girl did it just makes the descent even faster. To look at her face piercings everywhere says to me that everything in her head was probably not quite right. Such a sad end to such a young life as was the likes of Peaches Geldolf and Amy Winehouse

A fatal amount = sufficient to kill you? What do you want them to report? She took x grammes etc. In the circumstances how would anyone know that? The 'fatal amount' is a summary of toxicology tests.

Hell Yeah she knew what she was doing, and she knew what she was taking, SHE KEPT A DRUGS DIARY!! unlike most drug takers the majority of people who take 'legal highs' are aware of the content, they do their research into the compounds and how each one affects them individually, it actually develops as an interest (I don't want to say hobby or addiction) What trips people up is when a certain chemical is 'banned' and they tweak the ingredients but still sell it under the same name. Sad story as she will always be known at the 'mum who died of legal highs'

Mind you anyone who does that to their face can't be that bright
You can't judge a book by it's cover.
I am sure many of us judged this girl on her excessive (for most) facial piercings. Some do see piercings and tattoos as a statement of who they are. Does it create attention? Yes. Some may even link them to a certain social group. But as we all know its the person behind that face and the body that is important. The comment above is oft used and i think all of us have been guilty of judging books by the cover in the past.
But she must have been on drugs when she decided to do that to her face. It probably seemed like a great decision at the time. Like all those people in Boscombe with large facial tattoos.

wow another small minded person who doesn't know the facts or Lucy. so its all ok for parents who smoke or drink alcohol, or are massively over weight they of course can not be deemed selfish can they!! Lucy was a great mother who just made a big mistake, like we all make mistakes in our lives with the obvious acceptation of you because your clearly perfect and don't make mistakes. just think of your un called for nasty comments, this could all be read in years to come by the child who lost their mother so have some respect and bore off!!!
Im not a small minded person.. I am a normal person who looks after my daughter how she should be looked after. Not pumping my body with crap. nd i dont think it was just a mistake if she carried on doing it tryin to find drug that got her high. Theres loads of help out there for people with problems. People who dont look after their kids for whatever the reason is selfish dont have them if you cant look after them... I am far from perfect and deem to be perfect one bit but open your eyes and see people for who they are.

Oh pack it in. I knew Lucy a long time. She wasn't on anything when I knew her. You dont "have to be on drugs" to be tattooed, you're just making stupid assumptions. Let's not forget that the things Lucy was doing were perfectly legal, before you get too caught up in judging her.
Im sure you feel very mature and judgemental, making nasty comments about a woman you don't know and never will, but there are people who loved her and miss her. She made an unwise decision but it was no less legal than a young mum going out for a night out drinking and no-one seems to have an issue with that.
She's dead for crying out loud, what's so sad about your life that you improve your self esteem by knocking down others'?
