Saints defender Jose Fonte has signed a two-year contract extension with the club, and will be made team captain for the season.

The Portuguese centre half was due to become a free agent next summer, but he has now agreed a fresh deal that runs until 2017.

Daily Echo:

The news comes as a boost for Saints, ahead of the start of the Premier League season next week, with Fonte having represented a key part of the side that finished eighth last term.

Cardiff had attempted to prise him away this summer, with two bids believed to have been knocked back from the Championship club, but Saints were always keen to keep hold of the 30-year-old.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman, addressing the media this afternoon, said: "We are very happy because we like to keep the good players, the experienced players.

"Jose is the captain for this season on the field. We have another captain in Kelvin Davis who is the captain of the club but Jose is the captain on the pitch.

Daily Echo:

"I am very pleased about his new contract which keeps the good players and keeps our ambition and philosophy of the club and I am happy about that."

Fonte move to St Mary’s in January 2010, joining from Championship outfit Crystal Palace when the team were in League One.

He played a pivotal role in the club’s rapid rise from the third tier to the top flight, and has so far made 182 appearances for Saints, while scoring 13 goals.

Fonte’s performances last season also saw him ranked 35th by Bloomberg Sports in a list of the top performing players in Europe’s elite leagues.

The Daily Echo first revealed last month that Fonte would be offered a new two-year extension and would be made captain.

This is great news. Through all of the uncertainty over the last month or so, Jose has remained a positive force with the team and keeping the team spirit in the players. He was also a calming influence last year and more than often saved Lovren in the 2nd part of the season, who in my opinion became quite reckless and didn't show his early season composure which he had before his injury.

After all the antics of Lallana et al this summer, it is great to have a calm influence on the team. He also seems to be relishing the training under Koeman, a personal hero of Fonte.

Things are looking up. COYRs

Good news yes but too late I'm afraid. We could have done something special aka Nottingham forest under Clough. That forest team today would probably have been dismantled by the vultures. Yes the board have been a little gullible, but players and agents have a lot to answer for. The fans all work hard spending inflated prices to watch the team, where is their loyalty. I am sorry but something has died in football this summer, and we at southampton fc have been symbolic and the sacrificial lamb of what lays ahead. Maybe the 1 st division wasn't so bad !

As other posters have said now we want a n experienced classy CB alongside him please, as we don't currently have one, and that was proven last season.
Only a week to go and no new signings let's hope this is not the end point.

I know we all have our own opinions, but isn't now the time to stand up and support the club and the players who are here?

It has been a hard summer, but in my opinion Saints have done everything they could to get premium rates for the players that clearly had no intention of staying.

We have now got a key figure in Jose who has committed his future to the club and you say you are underwhelmed. If this is the kind of support OUR players get it is no surprise that they are quick to leave.

I for one am starting to feel quite pleased with how things are progressing and every time I hear Koeman speak I feel more confident that he will get us playing some good football and winning matches.

or it could tell you that morgan is not in the right mental state to be offered the arm band, he clearly is unhappy to be told he is staying so would we want a second season where the captain is dreaming of playing for another team? did you watch the press conference? well Ronnie wasn't happy with spider, they had a meeting with ralph this morning and spider told them he was still not happy, he was given the weekend off and told to report for training on Monday morning ready to do his job as a footballer.
he will probably leave in jan but that's a worry for then.
so no not `overlooked` Ronnie probably took the decision not to make him captain after talking with him several times and realising he isn't the right player for the job. if spider gets his head right he can still be a `leader` on the pitch like last year, he doesn't need to be captain to do that.
how do you know cork hasn't been offered a new deal? they might still be negotiating his deal! or does no news mean bad news for you?
you neggies told us that fonte wasn't happy and will one of the next through the door because he didn't like the way he was offered his contract and had refused to sign it, wrong again then.
you can be as underwhelmed as you like but most are happy that we now know who the captain is and that fonte is staying and is happy to.

SS, towards the end of last season we were all discussing what was needed for the 2014/15 season and the popular consensus was that Fonte would not be starting too many games as we were going to sign someone better.

He was a weak link, slow, easily turned, gave away too many unnecessary penalties, wayward passes etc....

Now as captain he will probably be the first name on the team sheet.
This is not what I'd call progression, my bar was set much higher.

Still, pleased for the lad has showed great loyalty in rejecting Cardiff's offer.

The good news which you seem underwhelmed by, is that Fonte has signed this contract. If he hadn't signed, you'd have been moaning about it. You can't have it both ways.

Like you, I would like a couple more CBs, if we can afford them, and would also like to think that our captain would be nailed on to start and complete almost every match - which I'm not sure will be the case with Jose. However, as the stats show, that wasn't the case with the Lallana appointment either.

Go on, have that cuppa. The good times are coming back.

Right here goes.... I'l give it my best shot......

I am over the moon that the magnificent board of directors has managed to secure the services of the world class defender Jose Fonte, they fought tooth and nail to stop him moving to the Welsh capital.
Great stuff.

All the other greedy b******ds can go to hell, they were rubbish anyway and all of their replacements are far better players, even though I have never heard of them, and we got silly money for all of them, money that definitely will be invested into the squad.

The departed players will see us in a higher league position will all fail at their new clubs or sit on the bench if they are lucky.

Well... hows that then?

People seem to be clinging on to any positive stuff coming out of SMS of late, and making Fonte signing a two year extension and making him captain is just not doing it for me.

And why wouldn't the club seek to extend the contract of JC when there are clearly a number of clubs after him. He is worth a minimum of £8million and more in my opinion. So it would clearly make no sense to allow him to run his contract down. Given that there has been no news on this subject it is very likely he has been offered an improved contract but has declined. Hopefully he is sitting tight and waiting to see what happens. If we end up losing him to an expired contract it is hugely incompetent by the club.

Not always a Costa Baz fan a thumbs up from me!

Acknowledging the cynicism in the post, could we all not do with just a little more cynicism and scepticism when posting!

Right here goes:

Not sure Fonte, would have been my top keep of the transfer period let alone captain. He relies on others to be good, and is questionable as leader. Could not stand up and be the bigger man in the Osvaldo affair. But as all of our other good players have left, so be it.

The board are completely inept not just in keeping Fonte and making him captain, but more so in leaving Saints with no other alternatives.

Taggart and Rodriguez gone by January. Relegated by April.

The board are total rubbish.

Being negative is not so hard. More difficult to try and understand the situation for what it is worth, without vitriolic bias, and keep the faith.

Don't have to agreee but at least osta Gaz, is more reasoned and less hysterical than most lemmings, and provides a decent representation of doom and gloom.

I,m totally with North Wales Saint on this one.A good solid player and with a quality centre half alongside I see no problems in that department.Remember Lovren trying to shepherd the ball out at Spuds, getting pushed off the ball leading to there winning goal.Quality defending?I don,t think so, we can and I am sure will do better, but for me Fonte is good enough.

Good shout NWS Saint!

He was class, and what we needed last year, but...... Lovren had some well dodgy moments.

Going forwards Forster vs Boruc duking it out. (Sounds pretty solid!)

AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!

!!! COOOOOOYYYSSSS!!!!!!

!!

FOP!!!! FOP!!!

Anyway, he looks a good buy. Young, talented, an England International, committed to the club.

We may not have Jesus but we have some other England International goalkeeping coach. If he is any good with Gazzaniga (Who was clearly cr@p under Poch and lost all potential) we may not just gain one goalkeeper but two!!
Do you mean Tony Jimenez? Jesus Perez was assistant coach.
