Southampton Boat Show's future safe until 2020

More stories about: Boat Show

THE future of Southampton Boat Show will today be secured for the city until 2020 when port bosses sign a landmark deal with council chiefs.

Tory council leaders are set to extend an agreement with Associated British Ports (ABP) to use berth 101 as an addition to the show’s main Mayflower Park site.

The feature berth will this year be home to grand Jubilee Sailing Trust tallship Lord Nelson, and in past years has allowed visitors to enjoy replicas of historic ships including HMS Bounty and Jeanie Johnston.

The deal will secure the Boat Show from 2014 to 2020 amid fears Southampton could lose the event to a rival venue such as Portsmouth if it only had use of a smaller site.

The council’s deal with Southampton International Boat Show Limited was extended to 2020 subject to getting the berth 101 licence.

Cabinet member for economic development Councillor Rosyton Smith said: “The Southampton Boat Show has been one of the city’s great success stories.

“The decision to sign a new lease with ABP will ensure the Boat Show continues to have a home here in Southampton for many years to come.

“By entering into a new agreement with the port for berth 101 we are confirming our ongoing commitment to the operators of the Boat Show, who for over 40 years have made the Southampton Boat Show one of the best in Europe.”

More than 122,000 visitors are expected to flock to Mayflower Park for the PSP Southampton Boat Show.

This year’s show, which runs from September 12 to 21, will be the 41st.

It will feature more than 100 boats, with around 375 berthed on the water in the largest purpose-built temporary marina in the world.

Andrew Williams, managing director of organisers National Boat Shows, said: “Each year we try to bring a fresh new approach to the show, and this year is looking like it will be the best yet.”

Freemantle - genuinely funny line! Brightened my morning. Good news for City as well and good effort from ABP for making 101 Berth area available to the Show. Keep it away from Skatesville, that's what I say!

SW: keep-show

the boat show come a long way from when it first started, use to be free to get in back then, and it was not a commercial for rich man play toys.
it was more like a over done boat jumble, where you had local river users selling spare gear, local small boat builders with there brand new rowing boats and a few sailing boats, and you did not get charged to have a stall or a display area, you just turned up and fitted in some where, humble beginning's to what we got now days.

I just wonder if there are any loopholes which allow any members of the public strolling around public areas- even if cordoned off and manned by gorillas in Hi-Vis vests?

Same has happened when I have gone for a casual walk in certain forests that have been staging live concerts- allowing for standing outside the fences and enjoying a far away glimpse of any live bands etc.

Mind you - I always carry my binoculars in the pursuit of birdwatching etc.

I've had the odd numpty try and scare me and pals off but I spout my rights and knowledge of Public Right Of Way etc. They then call upon their 'supervisors' who try and get shirty so I then whip out a mobile phone and threaten to call the police as a 'breach of the peace' might follow.

Try it

km & goard mayflower park can be closed to the public for 10 days max per year, you can get into the boat show free if you arrive by boat, but you can not moor up on the pontoons or land a person on them, you must land and moor up on the beach long side the wall, your boat can only be up to 16 feet long, unless you carry a SU number on your boat then there is no limit on size. should they moan and groan at you just say to them to take you to court over it, they back off very quickly. and if they do take you to court, all you need to do is go to the city archives and photo copy the rules and regulation off the park, the rules and regultions are fix they can not be changed.

Moody's still have their own Boat Show which does all these things. I don't suppose the likes of Sunseeker want to ply their wares in an atmosphere surrounded by the hoi-poloi do they. Last year I saw Ellen McArthur there but was gutted to miss seeing Gary Glitter being thrown out.

Berth 101 City Cruise Terminal, the large baggage hall will be used as well as the reception terminal for hosting events!

This will make up for the space lost from the West Quay phase 3 area.

We don't want Portsmouth stealing it, so this is really good news. Regardless of what some might think it brings many visitors to the city and is of great benefit. It also means that many yacht owners and contractors from the UK and abroad associate sailing in Britain with the port of Southampton, helping marine businesses in the city. I know this because I have a relative who works in the marine industry. This is an event that the city can truely be proud of. I shall be attending!
