LORD Digby Jones was the guest of honour at HSBC bank’s International Dinner at Lainston House hotel near Winchester.

The former trade minister and chief of the CBI offered a personal take on the major global developments in business today.

In a wide-ranging talk he urged his audience of bankers and businessmen to take advantage of the vast opportunities presented by the likes of China and India.

He also offered a sobering analysis of the challenges faced by the UK, particularly in literacy and education, but encouraged firms to take advantage of the good standing that Britain has in the eyes of most countries of the world. “There’s only one country that hates Britain and that’s Britain,” he said.
