THE number of people declaring themselves bankrupt in Southampton has risen 12 per cent.
Figures from the Ministry of Justice show 167 people petitioned for their own bankruptcy, as opposed to being forced into bankruptcy by a creditor, in the three months to September 2009 compared with the same period last year.
Nationally, the figures show an increase of 18 per cent.
