THE first hovercraft to be built in Southampton for the Swedish navy has just been delivered by Griffon Hovercraft in Woolston.

The multi-million pound deal to supply the cutting edge craft for the Swede's Amphibious Battalion will ultimately see three vessels delivered.

The hovercrafts are powered by seven Iveco engines provided by Hampshire motoring giant Hendy Group in a landmark £300,000 deal. Powering the hovercraft up to 50 knots, they can carry up to 48 people or 12 tonnes of cargo.

Graham Kirk, manager of Hendy division Hendy Power, said: "We have been talking to Griffon for many years about supplying their engines but this was the first time we had the right engines for their craft and we are thrilled that we have been able to complete the deal."
