FOR hundreds of years the mysterious city of Timbuktu has been a destination for travellers.
Now two Hampshire drivers are using an unconventional way of getting to the African settlement.
Ross Primmer and Steve Baker, both 21 and from Swanmore, are taking part in the Plymouth to Bamako Challenge, which starts on Wednesday.
Participants take a ferry from Plymouth and then drive to the finish in either Banjul or Timbuktu. The Hampshire pair have opted for the latter.
The journey of more than 4,000 miles will be completed in a Citroen BX worth just £100. The car will be auctioned off when the boys reach their goal, with the proceeds going to African charities.
Ross said: "We're going to have to drive through landmine sites as well as bandit country, so it is a little daunting."
