Woolworths is to open a new store in Southampton, just months after putting up the shutters on its Above Bar flagship store.

At 5,000 square feet, the new Bitterne branch of the chain is less than a quarter of the size of the city centre outlet that closed.

Due to start trading in October and stocking a range of 10,000 products, the opening takes the number of Woolworths in the area to five - Shirley, Woolston, Totton and Portswood, with larger stores in Eastleigh, Romsey and Fareham.

Employing more than 15 staff, the store will carry CDs and DVDs, confectionery and children's clothing, along with an extended range of 250,000 products, which can be ordered at any till point and delivered to the store via the company's Big Red Book catalogue.

Southampton shoppers were stunned in August when bosses announced the Above Bar store was to close with the loss of 49 jobs.
