STRAUSS Tod und Verklärung Five songs: Waldseligkeit Ruhe meine Seele Caecilie Allerseelen Das Rosenband BEETHOVEN Symphony no. 5 Angela Denoke soprano conducted by Andris Nelsons Strauss’ Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) begins dramatically with the irregular breathing of a sick man vividly depicted in the music. Memories and regrets crowd upon him until a rising theme, gradually becoming more impassioned, marks the transfiguration of the title. Strauss was a supreme composer for the soprano voice, and Angela Denoke sings five of his best songs, written for piano with his wife’s voice in mind, and later orchestrated. Beethoven’s fifth symphony, from the most famous opening in music, proceeds through its four movements from dramatic struggle to a blazing, triumphant conclusion. “The orchestra are at the top of their game” The Guardian
