Arundells new exhibition 'Britain's long road IN to Europe'
A new exhibition has opened at Arundells in Salisbury's beautiful Cathedral Close. Entitled 'Britain's long road IN to Europe' telling the rollercoaster story of the UK's journey into the European Economic Community and the pivotal role played by Sir Edward Heath. Through narrative boards, photographs, news footage, cartoons, documents and artefacts the exhibition covers the complex relationship with Europe with clear learning points from entry talks in the 60s and 70s and todays Brexit negotiations. There are cartoons by some of the greatest political cartoonists, Low, Vicky, Rigby, Trog, Illingworth and Garland. Secret papers detailing earlier failures to negotiate entry and iconic news photography and campaign materials from the 1975 referendum. Commented Lord Hunt, Chairman of the Foundation which owns Arundells, 'the exhibits provide valuable background and context to Britain's sometimes strained relationship with Europe and to the current negotiations'
