JUNIOR police community support officers have been helping to tidy up part of the community where they live.

The teams from Lumpy Lane, Northam, the Deanery estate off Marsh Lane and Chapel estate in St Mary's were involved in the weekend initiative.

Among the targets was the railway footbridge from Marsh Lane to Chapel in Southampton which was disfigured by graffiti and covered in rubbish.

Junior police community support officers, aged between eight and 14, spent the evening with officers who were enforcing alcohol restrictions.

More of the youths, along with police and Southampton City Council staff, joined residents the following day to tidy the area, scraping off the graffiti and repainting part of the bridge.

The remainder of the work will be carried out by the city council.

The participants are shown left and in action below.
