Whether you want to emulate Wiggo or simply save money on petrol and ride to work instead; cycling is for everyone says Jason Eastwood of Primera Sport Bournemouth. Here he shares his tips on how to get started.

For those of us that don’t live on a media free desert island with a population of one it’s impossible to have missed the wave of new cyclists.

Whether it’s emulating Bradley Wiggins, a fuel-saving commute, or simply to get fit, it now seems to be unnoticeably acceptable to wonder into the office or around the supermarket donning Lycra and cycle helmet.

Cycling is for everyone with bike manufactures catering for all levels, conditions and abilities. The non weight-bearing activity benefits those of us who prefer not to run and it’s easier for most to maintain moderate level of exercise for longer, but where to begin?

First you’ll need a bike and helmet, any bike but make sure it’s safe and the correct size.

If starting from scratch a quality road bike providing comfort and durability starts at £550 (Specialized Allez at Primera Sports).

A well fitted helmet that adjusts firmly and comfortably is a must!

Finally, don’t set your goals too high, ‘pedal before you can ride’.

Too much too soon and the thighs will be burning, backside aching and motivation on the first bus home.

Over the coming weeks we will take a closer look at all aspects of cycling from equipment, nutrition, maintenance and training.
