It’s not usually the time of day for it, yet one Sunday lunchtime the Waterside enjoyed bedtime.

Bedpush ‘85 took place on April 28, attracting throngs of spectators and participants.

The entrants, of which there were more than ever before, raised thousands of pounds for Waterside charities with their handiwork.

The 70 beds ranged in theme – some made to resemble boats or planes – others adorned with lounging ladies.

Steve Grice of Waterside Motorcycle club won first prize for the six foot dragon he had on his bed – surrounded by a troupe of St Georges and damsels in various states of distress.

Lymington Hospital Radio swapped the yellow brick road for the roads of Waterside with their Wizard of Oz theme, while Ashurst Disabled Unit depicted Cleopatra.

The beds were judged by New Forest verderer Maldwin Drummond before setting off along the six-mile route.

“Every year we say the standard can’t get any better but we are always proved wrong,” Maldwin told The Southern Daily Echo.
