I READ with interest your recent Northam account of the 13th inst, just to correct a detail for future reference.
The photo of the flood on the left of the corner shop is Millbank Street. Clarence Street starts at the right of the shop and finished at Northam Road.
On the left of the photo (not shown) is William Street, which leads down to the Boat Yards. How do I know this? My dad was a butcher and had this shop. I was born and lived there for 30 years till Northam was demolished after the Second World War.
The shop four doors from the corner was “Best’s” Fish & Chip shop, which was demolished during the Blitz with a direct hit. My mother, sister and myself were sharing the Anderson shelter in the next door's garden. When we surfaced in the morning and saw the sight just a few yards away, we realised why the shelter jumped up and down during the night.
