IF YOU were ever in any doubt that the south boasts some stunning landscapes, a new photography exhibition at Winchester City Mill should change your mind.

This autumn, the atmospheric interior of the historic mill is the setting for an exhibition that showcases stunning landscapes and dramatic scenes, many from the south-east region, by award-winning photographers.

More than 50 images are on display at the mill – a site that was chosen by the photographers because of its lighting and space.

Highlights include the work of local photographer, Terry Tucker.

Terry is mostly a landscape, nature and fine art photographer.

He uses his understanding of film and digital technology to control tone, texture and colour.

This can be seen in works such as the powerful Sunset over Salisbury Plain, which features an expanse of purple and golden sky laced with fluffy pink clouds over a sparse landscape.

This picture forms part of his Dusk ’til Dawn series – images from near sunset through to sunrise.

Dorset-based photographer Brad Ellement’s exhibits focus on natural landscape photography.

“With all the modern technologies and image manipulation software now available, I want to show people that wonderful photographs can be created with minimal post-processing,” says Brad.

“I hope that my work demonstrates my passion for nature and the outdoors.

“I am not a photographer who is after the ‘ultimate shot’.

I am looking to capture an image that draws the viewer into that scene, as if they were there themselves.”

Louise Lobban, a local artist with a background in fine art and photography, has taken Winchester City Mill itself as her subject. Using pinhole photography and camera-less image-making, she has created incredible miniature landscapes that focus on elements of the mill’s interior, resulting in images with an other-worldly quality.

Nature's Reward by Brad Ellement

“This is our third year of running a photographic landscapes exhibition and it’s going from strength-to-strength,” says Ric Weeks, assistant manager at the mill.

“Visitors really connect with the artworks on show. Local scenes are particularly popular, and illustrate the beauty of areas such as the New Forest, and the countryside of Hampshire and Dorset.

“It really makes you want to get out there and see these sites for yourself."

  • The exhibition runs from September 28 to October 26.
