Winchester Film Festival returns this month with six more classic and cult films in unusual but appropriate venues.

The 2016 Festival gets under way on Friday October 14 with The Spy Who Came in From The Cold based on John le Carré’s story and starring Richard Burton. The 1965 cold war classic will be shown in Hampshire Records Office and will be preceded by a short archive film from that era.

An abandoned recycling depot provides the venue for Silent Sonata the following day. The film presents a series of visually stunning sequences that are totally life affirming, even as they dwell on the tragedy of war. Audiences will be met at Barfield Park & Ride by a bunch of eccentric characters and taken to the screening a short walk away.

An Inspector Calls, a tense drama with a bravura performance from Alastair Sim, will be shown in the Old Grand Jury Room at The Great Hall on Sunday October 16.

Scarlett Johansson plays an otherworldly white-van woman in the deeply unsettling cult film Under The Skin on Friday October 21 at the Old Recycling Depot.

Robert Altman’s satirical drama Nashville, about politics and the country music industry, plays at Ashburton Hall the following day. Packed with great music and featuring a cast of unforgettable characters, this film blows the current TV series out of the water!

The festival finishes at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday October 23 with Johnny Guitar. Directed by Nicholas Ray, starring Joan Crawford as a gun-toting saloon owner and filmed in glorious Trucolor process, it’s possibly the most unusual Western ever made.
