REVIEW: Jigfoot, The Talking Heads, Southampton.
THIS was the new album launch for Jigfoot – the so called purveyors of “English folk dance music with swing.
Jigfoot are Nic Bradford (guitar), Ben Potton (fiddle), Gill Redmond (cello), Kim Sheil (melodeon) and Cath Watkins (fiddle).
Music from their new album was played in the intimate and atmospheric surroundings of the Maple Leaf Lounge.
The opening song, “Bang Up Hornpipe” set the mood with toes tapping a plenty, and the ensemble played with style, immaculate timing and strong musicianship.
The second song, “Jackie Robinson”, originating from the New Forest Gypsy community, was accompanied by enthralling dancing by Jo and Simon Harmer. It was impossible not to be delighted by their footwork, full of energy, excitement and cheerfulness.
“Off She Goes” had many of the audience dancing, which led on to some spirited dance lessons from Jo Harmer.
The quintet played their way through the remaining tracks of their album “Kindling”, to the rapturous applause of those lucky enough to be present.
Jigfoot by name, Jigfoot by nature!
