YOU WERE ON JIMMY FALLON’S US CHAT SHOW RECENTLY. HOW WAS THAT?

It was great. He was really lovely too, but I only got to talk to him briefly. Dr Phil was on too, and James Van Der Beek from Dawson's Creek. I was a massive fan of that show so it was good to speak to him.

HOW WAS NEW YORK?

I’ve been before but never had much time to look around, so this time I had a few days off and I got to go exploring.

I wanted to see the galleries and museums, and I finally got to do that. It’s always work, work, work when I go to a different city, but I still get to see a lot, so I won’t complain. And I get to see a lot when I’m travelling around the country.

SINCE YOUR DOUBLE EP CAME OUT LAST YEAR YOU’VE BEEN WORKING NON-STOP Yes, it definitely wasn’t what I expected to happen.

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN?

I don’t know really. But I know I’m very lucky that the boys in my band are my best friends, so we get to travel around being idiots, like we’re on holiday the whole time.

WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING THE GUITAR?

When I was about 10 I think. I was always writing little poems and then I started writing songs.

YOU HAVE A VERY NATURAL WAY WITH LYRICS, THEY’RE DESCRIPTIVE, WITTY AND ALMOST SPOKEN.

HAS THAT ALWAYS BEEN YOUR STYLE?

No, that’s a more recent thing. That just happened, I don’t know how, but it’s come on in the last few years. I just found where I was comfortable singing, and it feels like I have my own voice. Before that I was just seeking out different styles, although I don’t think it’s a style. It’s more a songwriting process, like when I’m working it all out, it just happens.

IS THERE ANYONE IN THAT MOULD YOU’RE INSPIRED BY?

Lou Reed was pretty good at it, and David Byrne from Talking Heads and Jonathan Richman.

WHERE ARE YOU UP TO WITH YOUR ALBUM?

We finished recording it the day before we left Australia, the other week. I don’t have much time, but I don’t do anything else but play music so we squeezed it in. I’m really proud of the album and it was really good to get some new ideas down and muck around with new songs. I really like recording.

YOU PLAYED COACHELLA FESTIVAL IN THE US RECENTLY.

DID YOU ENJOY THAT?

I did. It’s not like I’ve been waiting my whole life to play Coachella, I never really thought about it, but it was amazing that I did.

There are more important things to worry about than what festivals you might play, but it’s always nice to be asked and experience something like that.
