How did you sound when you first got together?
I think it was quite tame and self-conscious. We were really worried about what our friends and family would think, basically. We kept everything quite toned down, and then we spent six or seven months experimenting.
And now you don’t worry about what people think?
No. None of us had been in bands before Glass Animals, so we’d never performed anywhere, in any shape or form. Gradually we realised that making music we liked was fun, and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought. Then Paul came along...
That’s Paul Epworth, Adele’s producer and the head of your record label?
Yes. He told us not to be scared of pushing a boundary, so those things made us much more confident and it really helped.
How long have you been together?|Properly two years, although we did start in 2010, that’s when I first approached the others with demos, but we were studying and were all living in different cities so we couldn’t have done anything anyway. My mum still thinks I’m going to quit the band and get a proper job.
