WAR Horse author Michael Morpurgo and horse Joey, the puppet star of the theatrical sensation, have launched a new exhibition about the role horses played during the Great War.

Home Lad, Home: The War Horse Story at St Barbe Museum in Lymington marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

It follows horses from peacetime occupations to the Remount Depots and active service, as depicted in paintings by Lucy Kemp-Welch, Cecil Aldin, Lionel Edwards, Algernon Talmage, Lady Butler and Edwin Noble.

It reveals the contribution of horses to the war effort in a remarkable and moving story.

Young artists at Priestlands School met their favourite author and showed off their own responses to the themes of the exhibition and the National Theatre’s production of War Horse, which is currently playing to packed houses at The Mayflower Theatre.

The students’ work is included within the exhibition, alongside newly commissioned pieces by resident artist James Aldridge.

  • Home Lad, Home: The War Horse Story runs from tomorrow to April 26.
