A HOST of cult classic films will be screened under the stars in Winchester's Cathedral Close this summer.

Opening the movie season, on Thursday August 4, is the 80s adventure musical fantasy Labyrinth, starring David Bowie.

Young Sarah is left home alone by her parents and she has to babysit her little brother Toby. But the baby keeps crying and Sarah, while telling him a story to make him sleep, inadvertently conjures from a fantasy world the Goblin King who steals the child and brings him to his castle in the middle of a labyrinth.

The force is strong the following night when last year's Star Wars The Force Awakens hits the big screen. Thirty years after the defeat of Darth Vader and the Empire, Rey, a scavenger from the planet Jakku, finds a BB-8 droid that knows the whereabouts of the long lost Luke Skywalker. Rey, as well as a rogue stormtrooper and two smugglers, are thrown into the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the daunting legions of the First Order.

Expect singing and dancing in the aisles as Dirty Dancing is screened on Saturday August 6. Set in the summer of '63, it's the story of Baby (Jennifer Grey), a naive teenager who loves her daddy and wants to save the world. While holidaying at a summer resort with her family, Baby meets dance instructor and all round hunk Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). A powerful romance begins, hidden from Baby's father and the resort owner and based on their mutual love of dance.

The 80s classics continue with Top Gun starring Tom Cruise on Thursday September 8. As students at the US Navy's elite fighter school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.

The Revenant, last year's Oscar winner starting Leonardo di Caprio and Tom Hardy, is the Friday night offering. While exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilise his survival skills to find a way back home while avoiding natives on their own hunt. Grief-stricken and fuelled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald, the former confidant who betrayed and abandoned him.

The season draws to a close on Saturday September 10 with a classic feel good musical about teens in love. It's California 1959 and Head T-Bird Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) have fallen in love during a summer break in Grease. As summer ends, the two think they'll never see each other again but as fate has it Sandy and her parents move to America and now at school together Sandy discovers Danny is very different to person she met at the beach.

Enjoy comfy seating, a fully stocked bar and nibbles at the screenings.
