IF you've been inspired by the heroics in Rio, Southampton has just the exhibition for you.

All residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset were invited to submit their artwork for Southampton Art Gallery's summer open exhibition Sporting Life, which is themed around the subject of sport and recreation.

In the year of the Olympic Games, artists were invited to celebrate sporting activity and take inspiration from the world’s foremost sporting event, be it walking, running, sailing, football, swimming, climbing or any number of countless activities or diverse sporting pastimes.

The Olympics is renowned for its cultural associations. The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad involved artists such as Bridget Riley, Chris Ofili, Rachel Whiteread and Claire Woods, all of whom are represented in the city’s art collection.

More than 140 submissions were received and the winners are now showcasing their work until September 10.

First prize went to Angela M. Sweet with In the Spotlight with Rock Climbing by Joanna Williams the runner up and Track Racer by Mark Howard Jones in third.

The young person's prize was scooped by Hayden Judd with Ali and the Eric Meadus Drawing Prize was awarded to Race by Joe Low.
