AND there was me thinking the UK was leading the way in banishing Turkey Twizzlers from the school dinner menu.

Despite those pesky parents who kept popping up at the school gates with greasy takeaways for their offspring, Jamie Oliver’s crusade to improve the diet of the nation’s youngsters was an admirable, and largely successful, one.

But let’s be honest, America have now come up with what has to be a better way.

If anything’s going to encourage the world’s fattest nation to get fit it’s Beyonce strutting her stuff in a school canteen.

Her new exercise video, a reworking of her 2006 hit Get Me Bodied, has been recorded for Michelle Obama’s new Let’s Move campaign.

It aims to encourage kids to dump processed food in favour of eating their greens.

And if anything’s going to do it, it’s the pop diva in her pop socks.

I only wish we had been allowed to prance around our school canteen in the same fashion, but I fear it may have ended in tears.

I’ve no doubt my primary school dinner lady Mrs Wilde would have put me ‘up against the wall’, the 80s equivalent of the naughty step.

Still, if it’s alright for the President’s wife, that’s good enough for me.

Now where are those hot pants I last braved as a teenager….
