EVERY dog has its day – but for one Hampshire pub it’s a dog day every day.

The Compass Inn, in Winsor, in the New Forest is both a punters and a pooches paradise and its animal loving landlady credits the pub’s change in fortunes down to a little Jack Russell.

The pub which is owned by Enterprise Inns, dates back to the 18th century has a big sign on the door saying “all dogs are welcome.”

Immediately inside it’s easy to see why it’s so popular with dog walkers in Hampshire who travel from across the county to have a pint with their pets by their side.

Adorning the walls of the cosy pub are pictures of dogs – as well as dog pottery – and there’s even a dog ‘wall of fame’.

Mop Draper who has been running the pub for 20 years puts down the Compass Inn’s changing fortunes all to a Jack Russell called Boris.

Back in 2012 the pub was struggling, but that changed when Mop used Boris’s picture as part of a Christmas message to customers in the Daily Echo – which proved to be a big success and saw punters come into the pub in their droves.

Now Mop says that there can be as many as 20 dogs in the watering hole at any one time – and it also hosts a regular dog walk every Sunday and dog birthdays.

Mop enjoys the friendly atmosphere from her staff and she also has the help of her mum Jan Smith, 88 who comes in every week to clean the brass.

Daily Echo:

Another unique feature it boasts is its gluten free food, which is close to Mop’s heart as she is gluten intolerant.

Nearly all of the dishes on the pub’s menu are gluten free – and there is even a gluten free bottled beer called Crop Circle The pub has a choice of four real ales including Gales, Youngs and Doombar – with a pint of Youngs costing a cool £3.55.

Mop Draper, 60, said: “You can come to the Compass in your wellies, and you can come in with your dog, it does not really matter we welcome everyone.”
