THE magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane has been triumphantly and spectacularly brought to the stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs.

The stage version of Mary Poppins flies into Southampton next week.

Brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins is the tale of Jane and Michael Banks and their memorable adventures with their magical nanny.

Expect the unexpected in a show which sees Zizi Strallen take off over the stage as Mary Poppins and Matt Lee tap dance across the ceiling as he plays cheerful chimney sweep Bert.

Matt, who won awards for his portrayal of Bert in his native Australia where he is also a judge on TV's So You Think You Can Dance, told the Daily Echo: "I'm having a ball! I've always been a fan, I used to watch the film when I was little to make me feel better after watching a scary film!

"I've had a great career in Australia and loved playing Bert over there. I was really keen to come over to the UK to work and when you're asked by Cameron Mackintosh to do this show, well you don't say no to that!

"To play Bert is the opportunity of a lifetime for a man in theatre. He's definitely all singing, all dancing and it's great to be able to show off some skills and dance on the ceiling. It's one of the great elements of the show!"

The stage production of Mary Poppins is co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and has a book by Oscar-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes. It has a timeless score by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman including the songs Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Feed the Birds with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier award-winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The producer for Disney Theatrical Productions is Thomas Schumacher.

Mary Poppins is at Mayflower Theatre from Wednesday until Sunday June 19.
