PAUL Balsom has backed Nigel Pearson to stay on as Saints boss regardless of who takes over the club.

Saints' head of sports science is out of contract this month but hopes that Pearson is given the opportunity to build on the club's final day escape against Sheffield United.

And if Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde decide that Pearson is the man to take the club forward, then Balsom believes that Saints' future is in safe hands.

Balsom said: "I've worked with a lot of good coaches and a lot of good managers but Nigel is a rarity - he's both.
