MICHAEL Svensson will complete one of the greatest injury comebacks in sporting history tomorrow when he leads Saints out at Cardiff 991 days after last playing a competitive match.

The Swedish centre half has been named as Saints captain for the new season having overcome five major knee operations over a four-year period to return to league football.

He will skipper the side in tomorrow's Championship opener at Ninian Park. Svensson said: "I never doubted I would see this day."

Head coach Jan Poortvliet can't wait to have Svensson back for his first competitive game in charge.

"Svensson for me is the key player," said Poortvliet. "Svensson is a player you need."
