Teens complete Mongol Rally for Daily Echo-backed Red and White Appeal
THEY have covered 10,000 miles, eating horsemeat and herding camels along the way.
But after two months a group of intrepid 19-year-olds are back in the UK following their driving challenge to remember.
Richard Coppock, Jamie Voller and Richard White, all aged 19, from Romsey, took part in the infamous Mongol Rally organised by the League of Adventurists International.
The team “Give us a Push!” were the youngest in the rally and raised more than £670 for the Daily Echo-backed Southampton hospital Red & White Appeal, one of three charities they were supporting.
The trip had been marred by problems beforehand after team member Richard Coppock dislocated his shoulder just months before the start of the challenge, while Richard White was still taking driving lessons.
But they finally set off from Goodwood back in July and had to cross three mountains, two deserts and a vast steppe – a grassland plain without trees – to get to Mongolia.
They were welcomed home by friends and family last month.
The team said they had had an “adventure of a lifetime” and have already started thinking about where to go next time.
The Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76m to create a specialist day treatment unit for blood cancer patients from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.
With £280,000 left to raise it is hoped that the fundraising total will be reached by December, to make the project a reality.
The teenagers recorded their experiences in a blog. To read about it, on log on to give-us-a-push.webnode.com/blog. You can still sponsor the group at justgiving.com/Richard-Coppock1.
