It will be a fitting tribute to a “totally dedicated” puppy walker who died in a tragic holiday accident.

Peter Scurr, 69, was killed instantly when he slipped from a narrow cliff-top footpath in Jersey. He had been celebrating his 45th wedding anniversary with his wife, Lorraine, who fell shortly afterwards when she also lost her footing.

She was left with multiple serious injuries and airlifted to Southampton General Hospital for treatment in the neurological intensive care unit, but is now recovering at home.

Before his death, Peter of Vespasian Road, Southampton, had helped to train nine puppies to become guide dogs for the blind.

Now a tribute fund has been set up to name one of the pups in his honour.

Fundraisers have already collected more than £3,300 for the cause and hope to hit their £5,000 target by Christmas.

Kirsty Necker, of Southampton Guide Dogs, said: “I worked with Peter for nearly a decade both as a staff member but also as a volunteer puppy walker.

“He was a wonderful man with a wicked sense of humour who was full of vitality, totally dedicated to his role as a puppy walker and he produced dogs that were excellent guide dogs.

“The ninth and last puppy he walked, Skipper, was a sponsored dog and we can think of no better way to remember Peter’s exceptional commitment to guide dogs than by naming a puppy.

“We hope people who knew Peter, or are inspired by his story will contribute to this wonderful cause.”
