Staff at Elite Transport in Eling told of job losses just before Christmas
9:57am Thursday 27th December 2012 in News
By Jon Reeve, Education Reporter
FURIOUS staff at a Hampshire transport firm have been hit by a “heartless” festive bombshell after being told they are losing their jobs immediately.
The 50 stunned workers at Elite Transport Services have been told the company is closing its depots at Southampton and Felixstowe, blaming a drop in business that has made them unviable.
Elite Transport boasts on its website of being one of the UK’s “top five container transport specialists” with a turnover of more than £40m.
It says: “Our reputation for providing quality services in the time-critical industry of container logistics is paramount to our success so far and is key to our plans for continued future growth.”
But drivers and office workers contracted to the logistics firms were called in at 7.30am on Saturday for a meeting at the Eling Wharf depot in Totton, where they were told the grim news they are losing their jobs.
One worker, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Daily Echo staff are “disgusted” at the way they have been treated.
He said staff have been promised they will be paid up until the end of the year, and would be losing their jobs straight away.
The angry employee said: “We had no warnings. We’ve had no consultation or anything.
“We just got a letter saying they’re ending our employment.
“It’s very heartless and shows no respect for long-serving members, or any members, really – there are some of the younger members with mortgages and bills to pay.
“Quite a few are absolutely disgusted by it. When you work for somebody for a long time and get treated like that it isn’t very nice.
“Two or three years ago the managing director came down to plead with us all to take a ten per cent pay cut, which we all agreed to because we wanted to avoid redundancies, but when it’s telling us we’re not wanted he left that to the regional manager.”
A company spokesman at Totton confirmed the depot is ceasing operations, except for keeping subcontractors going from the site.
He said: “It’s basically down to the work coming out of Southampton. There’s not enough for the size of the fleet.”
But he said he would not discuss redundancy payments, as that is dealt with by head office.
Calls to the Manchester office were not answered.

Felixstowe is a pain in the proverbial to ship into, transport links it takes to long to get to the main road network.
Southampton, Tilbury and Thamesport are the best ports to ship into as they have the best access to elsewhere in the country.
Southampton though have done themselves a disservice by cranking up the cost of port Health inspection to a very high level.

And what called in the other day was the widest ship and I been informed the widest that Southampton can take, and any wider and new cranes will be needed, and the channel will also need to be wider, container ships will become longer and wider. way to big for Southampton, Southampton as limitations like all ports do, and those limitations are smaller than for ports on the Thames and Severn Estuary where the channels are a lot wider and naturally deeper and that have a much higher tide.
Think before you post again, biggest as in it carrys more containers, but it is not the longest, the longest container ships will not come to Southampton

The staff involved are at various times referred to as 'staff', 'workers' and 'employees'. Are they employees? If so then the company is clearly in breach of their statutory duty to consult - with 50 involved should be at least 30 days.
If they are employees then it is a redundancy, they are entitled to their statutory (contractual if better terms) notice and redundancy pay which, unless the company is in administration or insolvent should be paid by the company.
So are they employees? If any of them read this and believe that their statutory or contractual rights are being breached I suggest that they contact their nearest CAB asap. The Totton office is but a short step from the Eling depot

Considering these workers have been cooperating with bosses, as they even accepted 10% pay cut when cost of living is going up, why the bosses could not keep them well informed, rather than shocking them with bad news unexpectedly?
As for some contributor on this site suggesting that drivers have HGV licences or 'qualifications' so they will get another job. If there were that many jobs in around these workers would not have accepted pay cuts, which they did to save the very jobs, which have now disappeared.

Sadly these days disturbingly large number of people are in similar situation due to economic situation created by pure greed based system, in which those who created the crisis are looked after by government but us, the workers are made to pay the price.

Surely there were "warning signs", which had they been honest and truthful could have prepared the workers for this shocking result!

After all because of the strikes here in a National docks board port & felixstowe being privately owned & close to London we lost a lot of ships to them.
now Shellhaven coming on line changes all that & Felixstowe isn't looking such a good bet that's why they blocked our redevelopment of our container port isn't it?

BBH announced earlier this month that plans to re-develop the quay are progressing well.
Elite obviously consider that it's only a matter of time before they are ousted from the Eling site. This has probably been a major contributor to the decision to close the depot.

The number of vehicles at Eling Wharf on Google Earth gives an idea of the number of people that work there and will also lose their jobs when the Wharf is re-developed..
Now consider that we are promised "300 new jobs" by the development. No one has yet mentioned what the net gain in jobs is going to be...
Whilst the re-development of the site is long overdue, don't be fooled into thinking this will create anywhere near the 300 jobs mentioned!
If there is a net gain in jobs, these are llikely to be low paid, low skilled shelf stacker jobs.
It's possible that overall jobs will be lost!

That ground can only take so much weight, which limits the amount of reach a gib can have, because of the counter balance weight. They are still not really sure how long that berth can last for before the ground gives way to the weight and vibration, They had problems before on 201 and 202 berths though weight and vibrations the piles started to sink deeper and is why they transfered container work on to 203 and 204 back in the mid to late 70's.
Like I said all ports have limitations on size of ships it can take, Southampton waters is very narrow when compaired with the Severn and Thames, these 2 rivers can take much longer and a lot wider and deeper ships, and because they both have much larger tidal range than Southampton less dredging works needs to be done.
If you want to see larger Containers ships then we must concider about closing the Container port and moving it down river say from the River Hamble to Netley Sewage farm.
Tell me how soon do you think it will be before we see a ship a mile long, because this is what the planners are looking at and are trying to design now. and these size ships will not even enter the channel as there is no port that could take a vessel this size along the english channel, a vessel this size would go round Scotland to enter the north sea.

further to go to get there than here or Shellhaven cuts transport costs & delivery time of goods
He said they were dredging the river to make it deeper to turnaround the new size container ships but you say it isn't?
Also the whole of those two berths are being re-built & larger cranes are going to be used not the same size as now why oh why are you so Anti this city?
Join the TUSC & transfer all work from Southampton is the message your giving out isn't it?
ShellHaven shouldn't be even going ahead as there's enough competition for containers around the ports as it is but Gordan Brown saw a way to win votes & gave permission for it.
He thought winning London votes fgar more important than Southampton,Felixsto
we or Liverpool losing jobs.
This Transport company seem to be lying & come on you who know it all ( no Bugger all) what's the real reason for Eling being shut?
Is it the new development & the money to be earned whilst at the same time stealing from us the tax payer?
getting money for the site but not paying redundancy pay but expecting the tax payer to pay it is stealing in my book

Southampton port has placed a £26m order for four new, huge, ship-to-shore gantry cranes as part of its redevelopment of deep-sea container berths in the city’s docks.
A £90m project to upgrade berths 201 and 202 in the western docks will enable the container terminal to handle the growing number of ultra large container vessels (ULCCs), cementing the city’s position at the forefront of global container trade.
Redevelopment of two berths into one?
New Gantry cranes?
not looking like your telling the truthn is it?

“Our entire network of 400 agencies all around the world is active to ensure the successful launching of this ship.’’ Under ABP’s dredging programme a total of 450,000 cubic metres of material will be removed at the Marchwood Moorings, which widen the navigation channel by 30 metres, resulting in improved accessibility for container vessels using the existing berths operated by DP World Southampton.
Deepening the channel all the way to the Marchwood Moorings once again makes it look as if you got the facts wrong again?
So why is Elite transport shutting?

The Drivers who were made redundant have only been paid flat week for last week and so are out of pocket , not even their expenses were paid.
I don't think anyone is bitter I believe if they had just done things properly and been honest, people would have felt disgruntled but would have just walked away and got on with things, it's the dishonesty that stinks/

bazzeroz wrote:Regarding your comment "Christmas time sympathy" route: Almost all administration haulage companies close for 2 whole weeks at this time of the year. Employment agencies are also closed. "Dole" office is closed for 2 weeks and therefore cannot register unemployment or apply for any benefits. Many families overstretch their finances at Christmas, to give their children a good Christmas. As Elite paid their drivers weekly, many have to live from week to week. Surely there were "warning signs", which had they been honest and truthful could have prepared the workers for this shocking result!
I wish the 'Christmas time' sympathy route would stop being used. Ffs any time is bad to be losing your job. Easter's next so no doubt that one will be thrown into the mix. Sorry to hear this job loss news. Things are tough.
