A police officer suffered serious facial injuries while chasing a suspect.

The constable, who is in his 30s, was pursuing of a man who had tried to run away from him, when the officer was hurt so badly he needed hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Hampshire police said the incident happened on Fritham Road, Southampton, at around 3.45pm on Tuesday and police were appealing for witnesses.

He said: “The incident happened while the officer was in pursuit and resulted in him being badly injured and needing hospital treatment.

“We are working to establish the circumstances that led to his injuries.”
