A HAMPSHIRE teenager has been charged with assaulting a police officer.

The 33-year-old Bitterne based police constable was attacked after he chased a youth who ran off during a stop and search in Fritham Road, Harefield.

The youth is alleged to have swung his arm around to break free when the officer grabbed him, causing the officer to fall to the ground, leaving him needing ten stitches to his forehead.

He also suffered cuts and bruises and ligament damage to his knees.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with actual bodily harm and has been bailed to appear before Southampton Youth Court on January 31.

Anyone who saw the incident on January 8, at around 3.45pm, should call Bitterne CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
