Labour could agree to Europe referendum, says Southampton Itchen MP John Denham
3:40pm Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in News
By Tom Moseley, Parliamentary Correspondent
Southampton Itchen MP John Denham
LABOUR could agree to an 'in/out' referendum on Europe after all, Southampton Itchen MP John Denham has said.
Mr Denham, who is the Parliamentary aide to Labour leader Ed Miliband, insisted the party did "not absolutely rule out" a definitive poll. Mr Miliband had appeared to draw a clear dividing line with the Conservatives during Prime Minister's Questions, telling the Commons that his party "do not want an in/out referendum".
However, Mr Denham then told the Daily Echo there had been "a bit of over-interpretation" of Mr Miliband's comments.
He said: "We do not absolutely rule it out in the future, we do not know what issues will come up in the future.
"But we think to call one now will damage and destabilise the economy."
His Labour colleague, Alan Whitehead, echoed the criticism of David Cameron's decision to commit the party to holding an in/out referendum by the end of 2017, once he has tried to negotiate the return of some powers to Westminster.
Dr Whitehead, the MP for Southampton Test, said it was "folly" to make such a pledge so far in advance.
However, Mr Cameron's promise, in a speech in London this morning, was welcomed by Conservative MPs who cheered their leader to his seat at Prime Minister's Questions.
They accused Labour of being unclear on its support for a referendum.
Caroline Nokes, the Tory MP for Romsey and Southampton North, said: "I am delighted by the Prime Minister's speech.
"It put Ed Miliband very much on the back foot."
She said she had received "many hundreds" of letters from constituents calling for a referendum, and said "the jury is still out" on how she would vote.
Daniel Hannan, Eurosceptic MEP for the South East, said it had been "an extraordinary moment".
He added: "critically, the people who decide whether it's a good enough deal won't be the ministers and mandarins who have brought us to our present unhappy state, but the electorate as a whole.2 But the Prime Minister was heavily criticised by a Liberal Democrat, South East MEP Catherine Bearder.
She said: "David Cameron's speech was plagued with confusion - confusion over who it is was aimed at, and confusion over what he really wants to achieve.
"His increasingly desperate pledge to push for a positive vision for the EU is at odds with his attempt to appease chunks of his own party.
"Mr Cameron has doffed his cap to the right wing nationalists in the Tory party, whose real agenda is an immediate exit, and simultaneously put British growth, jobs and investment at risk."

Then how can we trust Labour we can't they promest us a vote on the Lisbon treaty that we never got, but allowed bits here and there to enter our law and rules with out the vote, the reason why they would not give us a vote on the lisbon treaty was because would would vote no on it and would not be bride like the Irish was and that would of destroied the EU totally.
As a Socialist I know that we do not need a thing like the EU to be able to work with other countrys, the EU is not there for the benefit of the majority it is there for the rich and powerful elite to benefit from
Aslo how could we trust any thing that as to do with the Bilderberg Groups, the EU idea is one of theres its part and parsel of there agenda of 10 goverments, armed forces and currencys, and we should and can not trust any one that have been to any of the Bilderberg invite meetings people like Clegg, Cameron, Millibands, Farage and Titford they have attended the meeting in the last 10 years.

It was a victim of its own meltdown BEFORE the global financial crisis. Check back and see what the public/personal debt and the deficit and the borrowings were BEFORE the financial crisis.
Labour was even overspending in the Boom years! They forgot about rainy days!!
Vince Cable and others warned the Labour government in Parliament in 2006 that they were overspending! In fact, Cable warned Labour 2003 that they needed to curtail lending that was fuelling the Credit Bubble but they wouldn't listen!!
However you look at it, Labour screwed up bigtime - screwing everyone of us in the process. It was a case of blatant Political Engineering that was a total disaster for all of us, especially the poor!

Under Labour we had one of the longest periods of sustained growth since WW2, derailed by a global financial meltdown which cannot be attributed to any particular country or political party, only to the ills of unchecked economic liberalism.

Added to that, they also bailed out various councils that had invested their money in Icelandic Banks. This prevented those councils going bankrupt, putting many people out of work, and preserving the services.
What alternative course of action did Cameron and Clegg propose at the time?

Exactly!! And they still managed to spend more than we got in!!!!
Labour's downfall occurred BEFORE the global financial crisis. - a crisis that they helped to create by relaxing the financial controls so that you and I and the great British public could borrow more money than we could afford to pay back! They promoted this in order to keep fueling the consumer boom via the property boom!! They helped create the 120% Mortgage! - you have to question the sanity of that! Then everything went Boom! Boom!
They forgot one thing! - to build in regulation to control their relaxation of financial controls!!! Hence the runaway debt that led us into the global financial crisis!!!
The result? They managed to make the have nots worse off than at anytime in modern history!
And the UK ended up at the door of the IMF!
Labour's had a couple of goes at government and each time we have ended up busted and at the door of the IMF. That surely must say something about the inability of Labour to run anything!!

If we're out we wouldn't have to cover the loss when Greece goes to the wall or Spains economy collapses.
Look at Scotland they thought leave the UK but keep their money as it's what the UK has to pay not Scotland Wrong the EU has now told them they would have to seek entry into the EU so good bye your Oil revenue.
If we can't pull back from this Federal EU & the promise is broken & we don't get a referendum UKIP will be rubbing their hands with glee .
Why is it when I voted against the Common Market Labour were opposed to it but now want us further into it?
Please all of you remember we were taking in with out our consent ( yes it was that idiot Heath) we had scare tactics to get people to vote yes to the Common market but still many of us voted against it.
now we all can see what lies we we're told so why shouldn't we the public have a vote?

Hungarians have unlimited access to the UK jobs market.
Romanians and Bulgarians have restricted access to our jobs market at present, although this changes soon. Their self-employed, however, can set up here on an unrestricted basis and work permits for PAYE employment can be applied for.
It is estimated there were 60,000 Romanians working in the UK in 2011 - I don't have the 2012 figure but it is no doubt larger.

I would love to see a Government stop these people who run a company owe thousands/millions get court judgements against them shut the company down sell the assets to another company (new name) they own so selling it to themselves & even though they are so called directors of both companies no assets or money can be taken.
as directors they should be liable & all the property of them & their partners should be siezed as it should have been in the case of Rover

The biggest European community in the UK are the French and there numbers don't even reach any where those numbers, they don't even reach 10,000 in numbers.
The Romania's are not that fuss coming here, they have every thing that we have here and they are willing to go totally all out on strikes, demos and rallys like they did last year in Romania to protect what they got from the government, they force there government to resign.
So, there are less than 10,000 Polish people in the UK accouring to you? Do leave off.
And don't accuse me of using 'extreme right wing' propaganda. You need to look at the official UK government websites for accurate statistics.
2011 census results - 579,000 people of Polish origin live in the UK. I think even you must recognise that is just a little higher than your 10,000 French statistic.
As I keep maintaining, you just make it up as you go along. Lies, lies and quite deliberate lies.

Unlike you I've openly apologised when it's been pointed out to me I'm wrong have you ever considered your wrong?
The letter I was talking about my friend felt such disgust in his union ( he's now a life time member) he burnt it.
He also didn't want his name in print so I know every thing about this & the Sea City Museum to be true so where am I lying?
We come on here we hear Kingnotail saying there's nothing in this city & saying it's a dive yet we had a council that tried to change that.
not only did they bring us Museums plus a Cultural Quarter there were plans for a snowdome( with Ice rink & rowing club) also a new fruit & veg market plus the expansion of Mayflower Park also many of the things Labour are now trying to take credit for were started by the Tories yet here you are slating the Tories?
Wasn't it you who said the refuse workers pay went to pay for Sea City Museum?
Wasn't that a lie?
So if the Tories hadn't applied for a grant how many of those workers would have any pay or indeed any job as wasn't this council going to cut 1-10 refuse jobs?
Only call me a liar if you can prove it & if your squeaky clean which your not

Hungarians have unlimited access to the UK jobs market.
Romanians and Bulgarians have restricted access to our jobs market at present, although this changes soon. Their self-employed, however, can set up here on an unrestricted basis and work permits for PAYE employment can be applied for.
It is estimated there were 60,000 Romanians working in the UK in 2011 - I don't have the 2012 figure but it is no doubt larger.

I'm sorry but that is pretty clear and conclusive to me. It also makes no mention of a future situation that would change his mind... Are these now more words of Labour's that can't be trusted - seems a pattern developing here!
